The second New York neighbourhood that I will talk about is Lower Manhattan (click here for my travel guide for the Flatiron District). The Lower Manhattan area is not the coziest area in New York City, but there are some sights that are worth visiting, so it is likely that you will spend at least a few hours here.

SIGHTS

– Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty is probably the most famous sight of New York. Many people pay the fee for a ticket to visit the Statue of Liberty (and Ellis Island) and it is a very busy sight. Because I was on a budget and it was my first time in NYC, I had to make choices and I decided to do the Statue of Liberty the cheap way- I got on the free(!) Staten Island Ferry that sails across the Statue of Liberty to Staten Island (and than took the ferry back to Manhattan). Although the ferry sails still quite a distance away from the statue, it still gives you a very nice view of the statue (and the skyscrapers). The ferry can be busy, so make sure you are in the front of the crowd and quickly pick a place to stand.

– 9/11 Museum
The 9/11 Memorial and Museum was a very intense experience. After seeing and hearing so much over the years about 9/11, it was very interesting to hear the American story. The photo’s, the “saved” items, the sound tapes…they all gave me goosebumps. I was impressed by how respectful but yet honest this museum was. It also felt very surreal to walk around in the museum. I would highly recommend visiting this place and taking your time, at least two to three hours (and do not forget to buy a ticket online).


– 9/11 Memorial
The 9/11 memorial is beautful.The waterfalls are very peaceful and it is hard to think that on those places the two towers once stood.

– One World Observatory
One World Observatory was my first experience of a real ‘skyscraper’. I love the architecture on the outside, and the view from the top is equally impressive.
I went here on an afternoon (I did buy a ticket online) and was very surprised by the whole experience: from getting into the building to eventually the observation deck. Lots of staff show you the way, the elevator is very cool and the “black curtain” thing was simply amazing. When I got to the observation deck it was not too busy, so I could enjoy the view!

– Oculus
Opposite the 9/11 Museum and Memorial you will find the white Oculus. It is a very unique looking building designed by a spanish architect (Calatrava). I thought it was mostly a mall, since there were a lot of expensive stores inside, but actually it is the World Trade Center station and it is on Ground Zero. The building is beautiful, but the stores (and the food!) are very expensive.

– Battery Park City Esplanade (and Rockefellar Park)
The Battery Park City Esplanade is a nice boulevard along the Hudson River. You can sit on a bench and enjoy the view (of Jersey City) or ride a bike or jogg along the waterfront.

De tweede buurt in New York die ik bespreek is de Lower Manhattan (klik hier voor mijn travel guide voor de Flatiron District). De Lower Manhattan is niet de gezelligste buurt in NYC, maar er zijn veel bezienswaardigheden, dus je zult er zeker minstens een dag rondlopen.

– Statue of Liberty
De Statue of Liberty is waarschijnlijk de bekendste bezienswaardigheid in New York. Veel mensen geven veel geld uit aan een kaartje voor het Vrijheidsbeeld (en Ellis Island). Omdat op mijn budget moest letten en het mijn eerste keer in New York was, besloot ik het Vrijheidsbeeld op een goedkopere manier te zien- ik nam de gratis(!) Staten Island Ferry die langs het Vrijheidsbeeld vaart. Ondanks dat de ferry niet heel dicht langs Liberty vaart, geeft het je wel een mooi beeld. De ferry kan druk zijn, dus zorg dat je voorin de rij staat en snel een goed plekje kan vinden.

– 9/11 Museum
Het 9/11 Memorial en Museum was een intense ervaring. Na er zoveel over gehoord te hebben, was het erg interessant om de Amerikaanse kant van het verhaal te horen. De foto’s, de gevonden voorwerpen, the audiotapes….ze gaven mij kippenveld. Ik was erg onder de indruk van dit museum; het was zo respectvol maar eerlijk. Erg vreemd om op deze bekende plek rond te lopen. Ik raad iedereen aan om naar dit museum te gaan. Neem de tijd, het is erg groot en verdient zeker twee a drie uur van je tijd (vergeet ook niet online alvast een ticket te kopen).

– 9/11 Memorial
Het 9/11 memorial is prachtig. De watervallen zijn mooi en het is bizar als je bedenkt dat daar twee hoge torens hebben gestaan.

– One World Observatory
One World Observatory was de wolkenkrabber die ik heb bezocht. Niet alleen de buitenkant is mooi, het uitzicht van bovenaf is net zo indrukwekkend.
Ik was erg verrast door de hele ervaring: van de binnenkomst tot het observatie dek. Er is enorm veel personeel dat je de weg wijst, de lift is erg cool en de “zwarte gordijnen” waren erg gaaf. Toen ik er was was het niet extreem druk, zodat ik echt kon genieten van het uitzicht.

– Oculus
Tegenover het 9/11 Museum and Memorial staat de witte Oculus. Het is een erg unique gebouw, ontworpen door een Spaanse architect (Calatrava). Ik dacht dat het een winkelcentrum was, omdat er veel winkels binnenin waren, maar het is ook het World Trade Center station en op Ground Zero. Het gebouw is prachtig, maar de winkels zijn erg duur.

– Battery Park City Esplanade (and Rockefellar Park)
Battery Park City Esplanade is een mooie boulevard langs de Hudson River. Je kunt op een bankje aan de waterkant zitten en genieten van het uitzicht (Jersey City). Ook kun je en fiets huren of joggen.
