Last weekend I went on a city trip to Amsterdam. I felt like I needed to go on a trip, and since I could not take a lot of time off from work right now, a weekend away was the only option. In the week leading up to my trip I spend some time planning my trip, because I wanted to see a lot and eat in good places..
Afgelopen weekend ging ik op city trip naar Amsterdam. Ik was toen aan een paar dagen ‘vakantie’ en omdat ik op dit moment geen weken vrij kan nemen, was dit de enige optie. In de week voorafgaand aan mijn trip besteedde ik veel tijd aan het plannen van mijn trip, omdat ik veel dingen wilde zien en wilde eten bij een paar goede tentjes.

SIGHTS/ ZIEN

– The National Monument on damsquare
The ‘Dam’ is the central square in the centre of Amsterdam. On it you will find the national monument for the second world war.
De Dam is het centrale plein in Amsterdam. Op de dam vind je het nationaal monument voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

– Paleis op de Dam
The “paleis op de dam” is a former royal palace. It is now only used by the royal family for special receptions.
Het paleis op de dam werd vroeger gebruikt als koninklijk paleis. Nu wordt het door de koninklijke familie alleen nog maar gebruikt voor speciale recepties.

– de Nieuwe Kerk
The “Nieuwe Kerk” (the new church) is a church in the city centre. There are no services anymore, it is used more for exhibitions.
De nieuwe kerk is een kerk in het centrum van de stad. Er zijn geen diensten maar en wordt vooral gebruikt voor tentoonstellingen.

– Stedelijk Museum
The Stedelijk Museum is museum with modern arts. You can find pieces of Piet Mondriaan and Gerrit Rietveld. They have a free audio guide and walking around takes about an hour.
Het Stedelijk Museum is een museum voor moderne kunst. Hier  vind je stukken van Piet Mondriaan en Gerrit Rietveld. De audio tour is gratis en een rondje door dit museum duurt ongeveer een uur.

– Van Gogh Museum
Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most famous Dutch painters. In this museum you find most of his paintings. I paid 5 euro for an audio tour to learn more about his life and the thoughts behind his paintings.
Vincent Van Gogh is een van de meest bekendste Nederlandse schilders. In dit museum vind je veel van zijn schilderijen. Voor 5 euro kun je een audiotour nemen. Deze vertelt je over het leven van Van Gogh en de gedachtes achter de schilderijen.

– Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum is the most famous museum in Amsterdam. It is huge and has a lot of paintings that show the history of the Netherlands. You will find the well-known painting ‘De Nachtwacht’ by Rembrandt here.
Het Rijksmuseum is het bekendste museum in Amsterdam. Het is erg groot en heeft veel schilderijen die in het teken staan van de Nederlandse geschiedenis. Zo vind je bijvoorbeeld de Nachtwacht van Rembrandt hier.

– IAMSTERDAM sign
The IAMSTERDAM sign is probably one of the most instagrammed places in Amsterdam. You find it in front of the Rijksmuseum. Either come here early in the morning or in the evening to avoid the crowd.
De IAMSTERDAM letters zijn een van de meest geinstagramde (is dat een woord?) plekken in Amsterdam. Je vindt deze letters voor het Rijksmuseum. Als je vroeg in de ochtend of aan het begin van de avond hier naartoe gaat, is het het rustigste.

– Vondelpark
The Vondelpark is one of the bigger parks in Amsterdam. On a sunny day it is the perfect place to chill for a while.
Het Vondelpark is een van de grotere parken in Amsterdam. Het is een prima plek om te chillen als het zonnig is.

– The Canals
Amsterdam is known for its canals. It is lovely to walk around the canals.
Amsterdam staat bekend om de grachten en het is dan ook erg leuk om door de stad en langs de grachten te lopen.

– Anne Frank House
The Anne Frank House is one of the reasons why people visit Amsterdam. Sadly it was very busy and tickets were hard to get, so I did not go inside.
Het Anne Frank huis is een van de redenen waarom mensen Amsterdam bezoeken. Helaas was het erg druk en ben ik niet binnen geweest.

– Shoppingstreets
Amsterdam is great for shopping. In the Kalverstraat and Leidsestraat you can find a lot of clothing stores like H&M, Zara etc. In the PC Hooftstraat you will find more expensive brands like Chanel and Dior.
In Amsterdam kun je goed winkelen. In de Kalverstraat en Leidsestraat vind je winkels zoals H&M en Zara. In de PC Hooftstraat vind je duurdere merken zoals Chanel en Dior.

– de Bijenkorf
Another place that is great for shopping is the Bijenkorf. It is the most famous mall in the city. You find it on Dam square and it has mostly expensive stores.
Ook in de Bijenkorf kun je goed shoppen. Het is het bekendste winkelcentrum in de stad.

– Walking tour
A walking tour is a great idea to see the city. I did one with Sandemans. It took about three hours and we saw some sights and learned about Dutch history.
Een looptocht door de stad is een goed idee. Ik deed een looptocht met Sandemans. In ongeveer drie uur liepen we langs bezienswaardigheden en leerden we over de Nederlandse geschiedenis.

FOOD/ ETEN
On friday I will post a seperate article about the amazing places where I ate in Amsterdam, so for now, I will just quickly mention some of them. I had the best (and prettiest) pancakes for breakfast at Mook Pancakes, ate a tasty salmon burger with fries at The Seafood Bar and was in heaven with the avocado and hummus on toast from The Avocado Show.
Vrijdag zal ik een artikel plaatsen over de fantastische plekken waar ik heb gegeten, dus ik noem ze nu even snel: Ik at de lekkerste (en mooiste) pancakes bij Mook Pancakes, at een heerlijke zalmburger met friet bij The Seafood Bar en was in de zevende hemel met de avocado en hummus op toast bij de Avocado show.

HOSTEL/ SLAPEN
During my stay in Amsterdam I slept in the ‘Stayokay Vondelpark’ hostel. I had stayed in Stayokay hostels in The Netherlands before, and although they were not always good, I did not want to pay a lot more (I paid 50 euro per night here).
The dorm was spacious and had huge windows. The beds were a little small and there were only one toilet and two showers for the 14 people in my dorm. However there was a locker for my bag. I had a lot of guy dormmates, which I was not too thrilled about in the beginning, but they turned out to be friendly.
I did not have breakfast in the hostel, because it costs 6 euro and I had already picked some places that were good for breakfast.
Tijdens mijn verblijf in Amsterdam sliep ik in het ‘Stayokay Vondelpark’ hostel. Ik had eerder in Stayokay hostels geslapen en ondanks dat ze niet super waren, wilde ik toch echt niet meer betalen (ik betaalde nu 50 euro per nacht).
De dorm was ruim en had enorme ramen. De bedden waren small en er was slechts een toilet en twee douches voor de 14 mensen in de dorm. Er was wel een grote kluis voor mijn tas. Ik had veel mannelijke dormgenoten, en in het begin was ik daar niet al te blij mee, maar uiteindelijk waren ze erg vriendelijk.
Ik heb geen ontbijt gehad in dit hostel, want dat kostte een extra 6 euro en ik had al andere leuke tentjes gezien voor ontbijt.
