I have been to Chiang Mai two years in a row and one thing that I like about this city is the food. There is a good mix of western restaurants and Thai cuisine. There was not much streetfood, just a few foodstalls (more during the Sunday night market).
Here are four restaurants that I visited in both 2015 and 2016 and really liked. I do have to say, three of them are western. That is because good western food is more difficult to find than good Thai food.
Ik ben twee keer in Chiang Mai geweest en een van de dingen die ik leuk vind aan deze stad is het eten. Er is een goede mix van Westerse restaurants en Thaise cuisine. Er is niet veel streetfood, er zijn een paar foodstalletjes (meer tijdens de Sunday night market).
Hier zijn vier restaurants die ik in zowel 2015 als 2016 heb bezocht en waar ik erg lekker heb gegeten. Ik moet wel zeggen dat drie ervan Westers eten hebben, maar dat ligt aan het feit dat goed Westers eten moeilijker te vinden is dat goed Thais eten.
Fresh & Wraps
Without a doubt my favorite place to eat lunch in Thailand! Fresh & Wraps has a great concept for the sandwiches: you chose a topping from the list (like chicken ceasar) and your type of bread (pita, wrap or focaccia). And the juices… OMG! I love their juices; the berry bonanza one is delicious! I could spend a hour of two here, just reading my book and drinking my juice.
Zonder twijfel mijn favoriete plek voor lunch in Thailand! Fresh & Wraps heeft een leuk concept voor sandwiches: kies je beleg en kies het soort brood (pita, wrap of focaccia). En de sapjes… omg! Ik houd van hun sappen, voor de berry bonanza sap is heerlijk! Vaak zat ik er een uurtje of twee in een boek te lezen onder het genot van een sapje.
The Salad Concept
The Salad Concept is another place with an original concept. Basically you can chose what you want in your salad, chose a dressing etc. As a salad lover I was happy to find this restaurant, because I always find it a bit scary to eat a salad in Asia.
The Salad Concept is nog zo’n tentje met een origineel concept. Je kan helemaal jouw eigen salade samenstellen, met groentes, een dressing enz. Als salade liefhebber was ik blij dat ik dit restaurant had gevonden, omdat het soms eng is om een salade te eten in Azië.
La Girasole
If you would ask me what my favorite food is, I would say pasta. I love Italian food, especially pasta! However, good pasta -or Italian food in general- can be hard to find in Asia. And to be honest…you should not want pasta when you are in Asia, because there are plenty of delicious Asian dishes. However, from time to time I just crave pasta.
My friend Anne (who I met in Vietnam in 2015) recommanded La Girasole to me and I went here at least three times in 2015, and three times in 2016. Oops! The pasta’s are okay and the pizza’s are good, plus staff is very friendly.
Als je aan mij zou vragen wat mijn favoriete eten is, zou ik zeggen pasta. Ik ben dol op Italiaans eten, zeker pasta! Echter het is erg moeilijk om goede Italiaans eten te vinden in Azië. Anne (die ik had leren kennen in Vietnam in 2015) had La Girasole restaurant aanbevolen en zowel in 2015 als in 2016 kwam ik er minstens drie keer. Oeps! De pasta’s zijn goed en de pizza’s zijn lekker. En het personeel is ook erg vriendelijk.
The Writers Club
For a tasty Thai green curry (my favorite), I would go to The Writers Club. It is a small restaurant in one of the main streets in the city centre. I think it is run by a local family and they are always very kind.
I remember last year, when my friend and I went to the restaurant a day after Songkran (Thai New Year); the restaurant was open, but the family was having their ‘family dinner’ in the back of the restaurant. The son had to switch between sitting at the table with his family and eat, and bring us our food and bill.

Voor een lekkere Thaise groene curry (mijn favoriet), ging ik naar The Writers Club. Het is een klein restaurant aan een drukke straat. Ik denk dat het van een lokale familie is en ze zijn altijd erg vriendelijk.
Ik herinner me dat Nina en ik vorig jaar naar dit restaurant gingen, een dag na Songkran (Thais nieuwjaar); het restaurant was open, maar de hele familie zat achterin het restaurant gezellig te eten. De zoon moest steeds wisselen tussen met zijn familie eten en de klanten bedienen.
