Ayutthaya is the former capital of Thailand and you will find are a lot of historical temples and ruins there. I went here on a daytrip from Bangkok; we visited four (very different) ruin sites.

Ayutthaya is de vroegere hoofdstad van Thailand en je vindt er veel historische tempels en ruines. Ik ging hier heen vanuit Bangkok met een georganiseerde trip. Tijdens die dagtrip bezochten wij vier (erg verschillende) ruines.

– Wat Phu Khao Thong (Golden Mount)
Wat Phu Khao Thong was the first stop. This white chedi is 50 metres high and visitors can climb halfway up. From there you have a nice view of the surroundings. It is a small area (there is only one big chedi), so you wont spend that much time here.

Wat Phu Khao Thong was de eerste stop. Deze witte chedi is 50 meter hoog en als bezoeker kan je tot halverwege komen. Vanaf daar heb je een mooi uitzicht over de omgeving. Het is een klein gebied (er is maar een chedi), dus je zult er niet al te lang blijven.

– Wat Lokayasutharam (Temple of the Reclining Buddha)
Wat Lokayasutharam is famous for its enormous reclining Buddha. This statue is forty metres long and eight metres high. It was wrapped in a bright orange cloth and there was a small altar were visitors could make offerings.

Wat Lokayasutharam is bekend door zijn enorme liggende boeddha. Dit beeld is ongeveer veertig meter lang en acht meter hoog. De boeddha was gewikkeld in een fel oranje doek en er was een klein altaar waar bezoekers konden bidden.

– Wat Maha That
Wat Maha That might be the most famous ruin-site. It is a big site, with a lot of different looking chedi’s and stupa’s. The most famous sight is the Buddha statue that is stuck in treeroots. The whole story behind this site and the beheaded buddha statues is very interesting, be sure to ask your guide about it.

Wat Maha That is waarschijnlijk de bekendste ruïne. Het is een grote plaats met veel verschillende chedi’s en stupa’s. De beroemdste bezienswaardigheid is het boeddha hoofd dat vastzit tussen de boomwortels. Het hele verhaal over deze plaats en de onthoofde boeddha beelden is erg interessant, vraag je gids hiernaar.

– Wat Phra Si Sanphet
Wat Phra Si Sanphet was probably my favorite site. It is known for its three white chedi’s. Apparently in the chedi’s are the ashes of three Kings of Ayutthaya. The site is very big and it is worth to take your time and walk around.

So if you are interested in a little bit of history and enjoy walking around ruinsites, this is the perfect daytrip for you. A guide is definitely worth considering (often included in an organised daytrip), since they can tell you all the stories about the sites.

Wat Phra Si Sanphet is misschien wel mijn favoriet van de vier. Het staat bekend om de drie witte chedi’s. Blijkbaar liggen daar het as van drie koningen van Ayutthaya in. Het is een grote plaats en het is dan ook verstandig om echt je tijd te nemen als je rond loopt.

Als je geïnteresseerd bent in geschiedenis en het leuk vindt om tussen de ruïnes te lopen, is dit een geschikte dagtrip. Een gids is zeker handig om erbij te hebben (zit vaak bij een georganiseerde dagtrip), omdat zij alle verhalen over de ruïnes kunnen vertellen.
