Bangkok, the capital of Thailand and backpackercentral in Southeast Asia. And you either hate it or love it. I stayed in Bangkokg a few days during my first trip in 2015, and last year Bangkok was my central station, where I kept coming back to (because of its location).
Does that mean that I like Bangkok? No! I am ok with (a part of) Bangkok. Since it is such a big city, there will be a part of the city that fits you. In 2015 I went to the Koh San-area (I believe it is officially called Banglamphu), because it was the only area I knew about . Last year I went back to that same area so that I would know my way around. I might have never seen a pingpong show or went partying on Koh San Road (and I have no intention to do so), but I do like to walk around Koh San Road, look for souvenirs and eat a cheap pad thai, while do some people-watching. But in the future, I would love to stay in a different area of Bangkok and see all the other sights.

Bangkok, de hoofdstad van Thailand en backpackercentral van Zuidoost Azië. En of je houdt van Bangkok of je haat het. Ik verbleef een paar dagen in Bangkok tijdens mijn eerste trip in 2015, en afgelopen jaar was Bangkok mijn centraal station, waar ik steeds terug kwam (gezien de ligging).
Betekent dat dat ik Bangkok fijn vindt? Nee! Ik vind (een gedeelte van) Bangkok wel oké. Omdat het een grote stad is zal er voor iedereen wel een plek zijn. In 2015 ging ik naar de Koh San-area (ik geloof dat het officieel Banglamphu heet), omdat ik daarover had gelezen . Vorig jaar ging ik terug naar dat gedeelte van Bangkok. Ondanks dat ik nog nooit een pingpong show heb gezien en niet ben wezen stappen op Koh San Road (en dit beide ook niet van plan ben), vind ik het wel fijn om rond te lopen, souvenirs te kopen en onder het genot van een goedkope pad thai mensen te kijken. Maar in de toekomst zou ik graag ook andere wijken/gedeelten van Bangkok bezoeken.

SIGHTS/ ZIEN

-Wat Phra Kaew & the Grand Palace
Wat Phra Kaew is a buddhist temple and known for the Emerald Buddha. It is a huge complex with different buildings and a lot of pretty statues. Take your take to walk around.
The Grand Palace is also part of this complex. It used to be the Royal Palace, but now the real Royal Palace is in the Dusit area.

Wat Phra Kaew is een boeddhistische tempel en beroemd door de Groene Boeddha. Het is een enorm groot complex met verschillende gebouwen en veel mooie beelden. Neem de tijd om rond te lopen.
Het Koninklijk Paleis is ook onderdeel van dit complex. Hier woonde de vroegere koningen, nu woont de koninklijke familie in de wijk Dusit.

– Wat Pho (reclining Buddha)
Wat Pho is another famous buddhist temple and the biggest and oldest temple in Bangkok. It is known for the statue of the big reclining buddha; it is fortysix metres long, fifteen metres high and decorated with goldleaf. I found it very impressive. The area around this temple is nicely decorated with floral patterns.

Wat Pho is een andere bekende boeddhistische tempel en een van de grootste en oudste tempels in Bangkok. Deze tempel is bekend door het beeld van de liggende boeddha; deze is zesenveertig meter lang, vijftien meter hoof en bedekt met bladgoud. Ik vond dit beeld erg indrukwekkend. De gebouwen rond deze tempel zijn mooi versierd met bloempatronen.

– Wat Arun
Wat Arun is apparently another temple that you can not miss. Sadly when I wanted to visit this buddhist temple in 2015, it was under construction, so I could not go inside. You need to take the boat (for just a few baht) to cross the river to come to this temple.

Wat Arun (tempel van de Dageraad) is een andere tempel die je volgens velen niet mag missen. Helaas werd deze boeddhistische tempel verbouwd toen ik er in 2015 langsliep. Je moet met de boot (voor ene paar baht) de rivier oversteken om bij deze tempel te komen.

– National Museum
The National Museum is definitely worth a visit if you are interested in Thai history and Thai arts. There are different buildings, so you would need at least an hour or two to walk around.

Het Nationaal Museum is zeker een bezoek waard als je geïnteresseerd bent in Thaise geschiedenis en Thaise kunst. Er zijn verschillende gebouwen, dus neem een uur of twee de tijd om rustig rond te wandelen.

– Wat Saket (Golden Mount)
Wat Saket is a buddist temple on a unnatural hill in the centre of Bangkok. It is quite a walk from the center of Bangkok (around 2 kilometres?). I was not that impressed by the temple, but from the top of the hill you have a great view over Bangkok.

Wat Saket is een boeddhistische tempel op een kunstmatige heuvel in Bangkok. Het is een flink eind lopen vanaf Koh San Road (ongeveer 2 km?). Ik was niet erg overdonderd door de tempel, maar vanaf de top heb je een mooi uitzicht over Bangkok.

– Chatuchak Weekend Market
In 2015 I went to the Chatuchak Weekend Market. We took a taxi (with a meter!) since it was quite far away from the Koh San Road area where we stayed. The Chatuchak Weekend Market is the largest market in Thailand and sells all kinds of stuff; food, ceramics, home decor, clothing etc. It is definitely worth it to stroll around for an hour of so. I like the fact that there are more locals than tourists and it is a great place to find more unique souvenirs.

In 2015 ging ik naar de Chatuchak Weekend Market. We namen de taxi (met een meter) omdat het vrij ver van Koh San Road ligt. De Chatuchak Weekend Market is de grootste markt in Thailand en verkoopt allerlei verschillende producten; eten, servies, kleding etc. Het is zeker de moeite waar om er een uurtje rond te lopen. Een voordeel is dat er voornamelijk lokale mensen komen en het niet overspoeld is door toeristen. Ook is het perfect om wat originele souvenirs te kopen.

FOOD/ ETEN
When you say Bangkok, you say Koh San Road; it is the crazy busy street were you can find souvenirs and bars. Rambuttri Alley is a street that is parallel to Koh San and has more restaurants. I wanted to share two places where I like to go when I crave croissants or pastry for breakfast:
– Konnichipan

Konnichipan is a bakery where they sell delicious (and cheap) croissants and danish pasrty. I found it last year and went there a few times to grab some breakfast this year as well. I like the croissants a lot and the pasty with cream and blueberry are delicious!
– The Brunchmakers
address: Thanon Tani
This cafe sits almost next to The Street Hostel and is quite new. They sell different types of bread (like croissants), the woman who worked there was very kind and they sell good iced-tea too.

Als je Bangkok zegt, zeg je Koh San Road; het is de straat waar je goedkoop kan eten en souvenirs kan kopen. Rambuttri Alley is een straat die parallel loopt aan Koh San en hier vindt je meer restaurants. Er zijn twee plekken waar ik graag naartoe ga als ik zin heb in croissants of ander zoetigheid als ontbijt.
– Konnichipan

Konnichipan is een bakkerij waar ze heerlijke (en goedkope) croissants en gebakjes verkopen. Ik vond het vorig jaar en dit jaar ben ik er ook meerdere keren geweest. De croissants zijn lekker, maar pasty met cream en blauwe bessen is mijn favoriet!
– The Brunchmakers

Dit cafe zit in dezelfde staat als het The Street Hostel en is vrij nieuw. Zij verkopen verschillende typen brood (waaronder croissants), de vrouw die er werkte was erg vriendelijk en ze hebben lekkere ijsthee.

HOSTEL/ SLAPEN
The Street Hostel (before: Coincidence hub and hostel)
In 2015 I stayed a few days at a hostel near Koh San Road called Coincidence hub and hostel. This year, when I went back to that place I saw thst it got renamed as The Street Hostel. It is a medium size hostel, down a sidestreet near Koh San Road. There is a little common area, where you can watch tv, use the computer or chat to fellow backpackers. The dorms are not the cleanest and there is no sunlight in the dorms, but the bathrooms are pretty clean.

In 2015 verbleef ik een paar dagen in een hostel vlakbij Koh San Road genaamd Coincidence hub and hostel. Dit jaar toen ik terug ging naar die plek, bleek dat het hostel nu The Street Hostel heette. Het is een middelgroot hostel, vlakbij Koh San Road. Er is een kleine gemeenschappelijke ruimte waar je tv kan kijken, kan computeren of praten met andere backpackers. De dorms zijn niet heel schoon en je hebt geen zonlicht in de dorm, maar de badkamers zijn wel redelijk schoon.
