This travel guide for the Midtown area is my sixth article in the “New York neighborhood”-series (click here for the other New York travel guides). Midtown is the most touristy, most sight-packed and (because of that) probably the most expensive area in Manhattan. It is also the place most New York residents avoid.

SIGHTS

 
– Grand Central Terminal
For a lot of tourists the Grand Central Station is the first “sight” they see when they arrive in New York. It is a busy transportation hub where subways and trains stop. It has the famous clock and is a must visit for Gossip Girl fans!

 
– Top of the Rock
Top of the Rock is the viewpoint on top of the Rockefeller Centre. It has three floors, the highest is 259 meter above the city. Because you get an amazing view of the city (including the Emipre State Building, the Chrysler building and One World Observatory) this is the best place for a view of the city.

I bought a “sun and stars” ticket, because I wanted to see the view during the day and at night. In the early morning it was not too busy. I had the time and space to take some photo’s and enjoy the view. In the early evening, around sunset, it was much busier. Sadly there were a lot of clouds, so the sunset was not good, but I did get to see the lights which was pretty.

– Rockefeller Center
The Rockefeller Center is a complex consisting of multiple buildings. There is a square and a street called Rockefellar Plaza. It is mostly known for its ice-skating rink and famous Christmas tree that are there every winter.

 
– Saint Patrick’s Cathedral
The Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church in neo-Gothic style. It is such a unique view to see a gothic church in the middle of scyscrapers. I did not go inside, because I did not know if it was allowed.

– MoMA
The Museum of Modern Art (or MoMA) is one of the famous museums in New York City. Its collection exists of mostly 20th century and contemporary art. I spend about 1,5 to 2 hours here. Because it was quite busy I decided to go from the top floor to the bottem floor. I saw a lot of kubism (Picasso), Matisse, Sezanne andVan Gogh. It was a pretty nice collection and the audioguide was very helpful too (I love audio guides!).

– Times Square
Times Square is busy with people and louds with all the music and lights, but you have to see it when you are visiting the big apple.

– Chryslar Bulding
The Chryslar Building is a lovely art deco building. During the day it is a cool looking building, but at night, with the lights, it looks so much more impressive (and almost a little scary). I really liked photographing this building, no matter what time of day.

– Empire State Building
No matter where in Manhattan you are, you will always see the Empire State Building. It is such a iconic building, and although it is not the most pretty building, it is very famous. I did not visit the observation deck so I do not know about the view (I went to Top of the Rock instead). This is also a must visit for Gossip Girl fans.

– Bryant Park
Bryant Park is a park in Midtown. it is a nice escape from busy Midtown and a pretty place to sit and relax for a while. It has some tables and chairs and the view at the scyscrapers is cool too.

– New York Public Library
The New York Public Library is a lovely building. The entree is free, so you can walk around. It is not that special (unless you are looking for something in particuler).

FOOD
There are plenty of food places in Midtown. I would advise you to stay away from the famous chains and look for smaller independent restaurants.

– Ess a Bagel
Address: 831 3rd Ave, New York.
Like I said in my article about the bagels in New York (click here for that article), Ess-a-bagel is a great place to get a bagel. They have loads of options, there usually is not a long line, the price is good and the taste is good too.

– Magnolia bakery
Address: 1240 6th Ave, New York.
Magnolia bakery is famous for their cupcakes. However, when I went to this bakery, I was amazed by all the other sweets that they had too. So i did not buy a cupcake, but a keylime cheesecake and blueberry muffin. Both of them were very tasty.

– Ellen’s Stardust Diner
Address: 1650 Broadway, New York.
Ellen’s Stardust Diner is a hate it or love it kind-of-thing. It is a true American diner where you can get burgers and fries and the interior is very colorful….but there is more! The waiters are actually wannabe broadway stars, so they serve you your food and have to sing songs when it is their turn. A visit to Elle’s Stardust Diner is not cheap and a real touristy thing to do, but it is definitely a unique and fun experience. Although I am not a huge fan of musicals, I could appreciate this place.

– Sarabeth’s
Address: 40 Central Park S, New York.
I had read about Sarabeth’s on a blog and decided to go there for breakfast one morning. The buttermilk pancakes with strawberries that I ordered came very fast (almost too fast, it made me suspicious about how fresh they were), but they tasted fine.

– Little Alley
Address: 3538, 550 3rd Ave, New York.
Even though the interior of Little Alley looks modern, it still feels quite small and authenthic. I had a noodle dish that was good and some dumplings, which were very spicy but tasted good too. The staff was very friendly.

– Bareburger
Address: 313 W 57th St, New York (but they have many locations in Manhattan)
Bareburger is another place that I found through some people on Youtube. This restaurant serves delicious burgers. I went for a “so cal” burger with turkey and avocado and it was very good (the fries were not the best). It was a bit expensive, but worth it.

– Luke’s Lobster
Address: Many locations in Manhattan
When you are in NYC, you have to try a lobster roll from Luke’s Lobster. And that is not going to be a problem, since there are a lot of Luke’s Lobster restaurants in the city. The rolls are not very big, but it is fine as a snack or for lunch. If you want a full meal, order two or some sides.

Deze travel guide voor Midtown is het zesde artikel in mijn “buurten in New York-serie” (klik hier voor mijn andere New York travel guides). Midtown is de meest toeristische buurt en een van de duurdere gebieden in Manhattan. Het is ook een zone die de meeste New Yorkers ontwijken.

ZIEN
– Grand Central Terminal
Veel toeristen komen via Grand Central Manhattan binnen. Het is een druk station waar treinen en metro’s stoppen. De klok is erg bekend en Gossip Girl fans zullen deze plek zeker willen bezoeken.

– Top of the Rock
Top of the Rock is onderdeel van het Rockefeller Center. TOTR heeft drie verdiepingen, the hoogste is 259 meter boven de stad. Dit is misschien wel het beste uitzicht in NYC (je kan de Empire State Building, de Chrysler Building en One World Observatory zien).
Ik kocht een “sun and stars” ticket, omdat ik het uitzicht zowel overdag als ’s avonds wilde zien. In de ochtend was het niet enorm druk. Ik had genoeg plek en tijd om foto’s te maken en van het uitzicht te genieten. Toen ik later  aan het begin van de avond terug ging was het een stuk drukker. Helaas waren er veel wolken, waardoor de zonsondergang niet te zien was, maar het was een mooi gezicht om langzaamaan alle lampen aan te zien gaan.

– Rockefeller Center
Rockefeller Center bestaat uit verschillende gebouwen. Er is een plein en een straat “Rockefeller Plaza”. Deze plek is vooral bekend vanwege de ijsbaan en de kerstboom die hier elke winter staan.

– Saint Patrick’s Cathedral
De Saint Patrick’s Kathedraal is een katholieke kerk in neo-gotische stijl. Ik vond het een erg bijzonder gezicht om zo’n kerk tussen alle wolkenkrabbers te zien. Helaas ben ik niet binnenin de kerk geweest.

– Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue
De Saint Thomas kerk op Fifth Avenue is een kerk die ook  gemaakt is in neo-gotische stijl.

 – MoMA
Het Museum of Modern Art (of MoMA) is een van de bekendste musea in New York City. De collectie heeft voornamelijk 20^–eeuwse kunst en moderne kunst. Ik heb hier ongeveer anderhalf a twee uur rondgelopen. Omdat het redelijk druk was besloot ik te beginnen op de bovenste verdieping. Er hing vooral veel kubisme (Picasso), Matisse, Sezanne en Van Gogh. Het was een mooie collectie en de audiogids was erg behulpzaam (ik houd van audio gidsen!).

– Times Square
Times Square  is druk…met mensen, muziek en licht, maar het is een must voor iedereen die New York voor het eerst bezoekt.

– Chryslar Bulding
De Chryslar Building is een mooi Art Deco gebouw. Overdag lijkt het een leuk gebouw, maar ’s avonds, met de lichten, is het veel indrukwekkender (en haast een beetje eng).

 – Empire State Building
Waar je ook in New York staat, je kan vaak de Empire State Building zien. Ondanks dat het niet echt een heel mooi gebouw is, is het wel heel erg bekend. Ik heb het “observation deck” niet bezocht, omdat ik koos voor het uitzicht van de Top of the Rock).

– Bryant Park
Bryant Park is een park in Midtown. Het is een fijne plek om even van de drukte van Midtown te ontsnappen. Er staan tafels en stoelen en je hebt een mooi uitzicht op verschillende wolkenkrabbers.

 – New York Public Library
De New York Public Library is een mooi gebouw. De entree is gratis, dus als je in de buurt bent is het leuk om even binnen te lopen. Er is niet veel bijzonders te zien (soms hebben ze interessante kleine tentoonstellingen), alleen als je iets specifieks wilt opzoeken.

ETEN
Er zijn  veel restaurantjes en eettentjes in Midtown. Ik zou zeggen, probeer de bekende ketens te ontwijken en ga voor de kleine restaurants.

– Ess a Bagel
Adres: 831 3rd Ave, New York.
Zoals ik al zei in mijn artikel over bagels in New York (klik hier voor dat artikel), is Ess-a-bagel een van de betere plekken om een bagel te halen. Ze hebben heel veel opties, vaak is er wachtrij niet te lang, de prijs is redelijk en de smaak is ook goed.  

– Magnolia Bakery
Adres: 1240 6th Ave, New York.
Magnolia Bakery staat bekend om hun cupcakes. Maar toen ik naar deze bakkerij ging, was ik verrast door alle andere producten die ze verkochten. Ik kocht geen cupcake, maar een keylime cheesecake en een blueberry muffin. Beide waren heerlijk.

– Ellen’s Stardust Diner
Adres: 1650 Broadway, New York.
Ellen’s Stardust Diner is een bijzondere tent. Het is een echte Amerikaanse diner waar je burgers en friet kan krijgen en het interieur is kleurrijk…maar er is meer! De serveersters zijn wannabe broadway sterren; zij bedienen en af en toe zingen ze een liedje voor de diner. Het is zeker geen goedkope plek en vrij toeristisch, maar zeker een leuke en unieke ervaring. Ondanks dat ik geen grote fan van musicals ben, vond ik dit toch wel leuk om te zien.

 – Sarabeth’s
Adres: 40 Central Park S, New York.
Ik ging naar Sarabeth’s voor het ontbijt. De buttermilk pancakes met aardbeien die ik bestelde kwamen erg snel (misschien wel een beetje te snel voor verse), maar ze smaakten wel goed.

– Little Alley
Adres: 3538, 550 3rd Ave, New York.
Ondanks dat het interieur van Little Alley erg modern oogt, voelt dit restaurant toch klein en authentiek aan. Ik koos voor een noedelgerecht en dumplings in chilisauce, deze laatse waren erg pittig, maar wel lekker. Het personeel was ook erg vriendelijk.

– Bareburger
Adres: 313 W 57th St, New York (maar er zijn verschillende locaties in Manhattan)
Bareburger is een van de plekken die ik vond door mensen op Youtube die ik volg. Dit restaurant serveert heerlijke burgers. Ik koos de “so cal” kalkoen burger met avocado en die was erg lekker (de patat was niet geweldig). Het was redelijk prijzig, maar de burger was het zeker waard.

– Luke’s Lobster
Adres: Diverse locaties in Manhattan
Als je in NYC bent, moet je zeker een  lobster roll van Luke’s Lobster proberen. En dat zla geen probleem zijn, aangezien je er een heleboel Luke’s Lobster’s in de stad zijn. Het broodje kreeft is niet al te groot, maar is een prima optie als snack of lunch. Wil je een volledige maaltijd, bestel er dan twee, of bestel een bijgerecht.
