‘The Beach’…who does not know it? When you are backpacking you will probably meet at least one person who is reading the book by Alex Garland…and when you talk to people around you about backpacking, most people will immediately think about the movie. Since the book is from 1996 and the movie from 2000, I wondered if it was still relevant.

In ‘The Beach’ a young American named Richard arrives in Thailand for a holiday. In a hotel in Bangkok he meets a couple, Etienne and Francoise, and a weird guy called Daffy. Daffy tells Richard about an island that nobody knows about. Richard decides to try to find this island, together with Etienne and Francoise…. and than strange things happen.
Although, in my opinion, only the first hour of the movie is ‘somewhat realistic’, I believe that these sixty minutes already teach us a lot about travelling/ backpacking.

Here are 5 lessons that this movie has taught us:
1. We travel because we are looking for something more beautiful
In the beginning of the movie Richard talks about why people travel. He says we are “looking for something more beautiful, something more exciting, something more dangerous”.
I think that is still a big part of why people travel (or go backpacking) these days. Backpacking is a great experience; you see beautiful places, get to do fun activities and every once in a while you have a fright. This all makes you feel so alive and content.

2. You need an open mind
Also in the beginning, Richard says people should “keep an open mind and suck in the experience”.
I think this is one of the most shared advises about travelling. You can not enjoy backpacking fully if you do not have an open mind (However this does not mean you have to try everything though!). For example: sitting in plastic chairs next to a busy road in Hanoi (Vietnam) with a bowl of steaming broth with some noodles, vegetables and something that looks like chicken might not sounds too appealing, but it might be the best Pho you have ever had.

3. We like to share our information
In the movie there is a moment where Richard leaves a map of the secret beach with his neighbour-travellers and he says “that spreading news is a part of a travellers nature”.
I think this is so true. Is that not the reason why we are travelbloggers? I started this blog to share my trips with other like-minded people. And like I said in one of my previous articles I like to talk with fellow travellers during my trips and share information about where we have been and where we want to go. This way you get true reviews and see what makes people excited.

4. Sometimes you need your fellow backpackers for a little push
Richard inivites Etienne and Francoise to go with him to look for the secret island. They help each other through the tough swim. Plus, if Francoise did not jump off that waterfall, Richard might had never found the secret beach.

5. The world is a beautiful place
My favorite part of the movie is when Richard, Etienne, Francoise and the others walk to the secret beach. The excitement on their faces and the reaction when they eventually see the beautiful beach…. it is so relatable. I travel for those moments of happiness!
Fun fact: in the movie they show a map of the secret island and it is above Koh Phangan’…which would make it Koh Tao. But the movie is actually filmed on Koh Phi Phi Leh, which is on the other side of Thailand. Many toerists visit Koh Phi Phi to see where this movie was shot. I was on Koh Phi Phi Don in 2015, but sadly I had no time to visit Koh Phi Phi Ley.

‘The Beach’…. wie heeft er niet van gehoord? Tijdens het backpacken kom je minstens een iemand tegen die het boek van Alex Garland leest…. en als je met mensen praat over backpacken, denken veel direct aan de film. Aangezien het boek uit 1996 stamt en de film uitkwam in 2000, vroeg ik mij af hoe relevant het nog is.

In ‘The Beach’ gaat de jonge Amerikaan Richard naar Thailand op vakantie. In een hotel in Bangkok leert hij een stelletje kennen, Etienne en Francoise, en een vreemde vent genaamd Daffy. Daffy vertelt Richard over een geheim eiland die niemand kent. Richard besluit op zoek te gaan naar dit eiland en vraagt Etienne en Francoise mee….en dan gebeuren er vreemde dingen.
Ondanks dat ik alleen het eerste uur van de film ‘soortvan realistisch’ vind, leren deze zestig minuten ons wel het een en ander over reizen en backpacken.

Hier zijn 5 lessen die wij van deze film hebben geleerd:
1. We reizen omdat we zoeken naar iets moois.
In het begin van de film vertelt Richard waarom mensen op reis gaan. Hij zegt dat zij “op zoek zijn naar iets moois en spannends”.
Ik denk dat dat nog steeds een grote reden is waarom mensen reizen of backpacken. Het is een fantastische ervaring; je ziet mooie plekken en doet leuke activiteiten.

2. Je moet open staan voor nieuwe ervaringen
Richard zegt ook in het begin dat mensen “moeten open staan voor nieuwe ervaringen”. Dit is een van de meest gedeelde adviezen over reizen. Je kan niet volledig genieten van het reizen als je niet open staat voor nieuwe dingen (maar dat betekent natuurlijk niet dat je alles maar moet proberen!). Bijvoorbeeld: zittend op een plastic stoeltje aan de kant van de weg in Hanoi (Vietnam) met een bord dampende bouillon met noedels klinkt misschien niet zo aantrekkelijk, maar het kan zo maar eens de lekkerste Pho zijn die je ooit hebt gehad.

3. We delen graag onze informatie
In de film is er een moment waarop Richard een plattegrond van het geheime strand achterlaat bij andere reizigers die hij had leren kennen en hij zegt dat “het delen van informatie een onderdeel is van het reiziger zijn”.
Ik denk absoluut dat dit zo is. Is dat niet de reden waarom wij reisbloggers zijn? Ik begon mijn blog omdat ik graag mijn trips wilde delen met mensen die net zo van reizen houden als ik. En zoals ik al eerder zei in een eerder artikel ik vind het altijd leuk om met mede reizigers te praten tijdens het reizen en informatie te delen van waar je bent geweest. Dit is de beste manier om echte reviews te krijgen, want je ziet waar mensen enthousiast van worden.

4. Soms heb je mede reizigers nodig voor die extra push
Richard nodigt Etienne en Francoise uit om met hem op zoek te gaan naar het geheime strand. Ze helpen elkaar tijdens de lange zwemtocht. En, als Francoise niet van die waterval was gesprongen, had Richard misschien het strand nooit gevonden.

5. De wereld is prachtig
Mijn favoriete moment van de film is wanneer Richard, Etienne en Francoise met de anderen naar het strand lopen. Het geluk op hun gezicht als ze het strand zien…..het is erg herkenhaar. Ik houd van die geluksmomenten!
Grappig feit: in de film laten ze een kaart zien van het geheime eiland en het ligt boven Koh Phangan….dat zou betekenen dat het Koh Tao is. Maar de film is eigenlijk gefilmd op Koh Phi Phi Leh, wat aan de andere kant van Thailand ligt. Veel toeristen bezoeken Koh Phi Phi om het bekende strand te zien. Ik was in 2015 op Koh Phi Phi Don, maar ik had helaas geen tijd om Koh Phi Phi Ley te bezoeken.
