Siem Reap is a city in the north-west of Cambodia and known for one thing: Angkor Wat. I have been lucky enough to visit this little city twice. During my first visit in 2015, I kind of fell in love with this cute town. Both years I stayed there for about five days and that is a long time compaired to most backpackers, who only go to Siem Reap to see the Angkor temples.

Siem Reap is een stad in het noordwesten van Cambodja en bekend om een ding: Angkor Wat. Tijdens mijn eerste bezoek in 2015 werd ik een beetje verliefd op dit schattige stadje en daarom besloot ik in 2016 weer een paar dagen naar Siem Reap te gaan. Beide keren ben ik ongeveer vier dagen gebleven, wat veel is, aangezien de meeste backpackers er alleen even komen om de Angkor tempels te zien.

 SIGHTS/ ZIEN

–  Angkor temples
Angkor Wat is the reason people come to Siem Reap (or even Cambodia). It has been one of the most famous ‘sights’ of the world for years. And to be honest, it is one of the most beautiful and impressive buildings that I have ever seen. The whole ‘area’ around Angkor Wat with all the different temples is huge, so you need more than one day to see everything.
However, believe me that one or two days are more than enough; after a while all the temples start to look the same and that combined with the heath make these trips very tough. I will post a seperate article about all the temples in the ‘area’.

Angkor Wat is de reden waarom mensen naar Siem Reap (of zelfde Cambodja) komen. Het staat al jaren in de top van de lijst met ‘bekendste’ bezienswaardigheden te wereld. En om eerlijk te zijn, het is ook een van de mooiste en indrukwekkendste gebouwen die ik ooit heb gezien. De hele ‘zone’ rond Angkor Wat met alle verschillende tempels is enorm en je hebt zeker een paar dagen nodig om dat allemaal te zien.
Maar geloof me dat een of twee dagen meer dan genoeg is; na een tijdje lijken alle tempels hetzelfde en dat samen met de warmte zorgt ervoor dat het een zware dag wordt. Ik zal nog een apart artikel over de tempels in de Angkor Wat area schrijven.

– Angkor museum
The Angkor museum is worth a visit if you want to know more about the Khmer empires. It is a well put together museum and you can walk around with an audioguide.

Het Angkor museum is een bezoekje waard als je geïnteresseerd bent in de Khmer imperiums. Het is een goed onderhouden museum en je kan rondlopen met een audiogids op.

– War Museum Cambodia
The War Museum was built in 2001 and gives visitors an opportunity to learn about what happend during the war in Cambodia. On the property are several war machines like tanks and aricrafts, and there is an area with photo’s. It is not very big, so you can just walk around and see everything. You can also ask a guide to show you around.
When my friend Nina and I were there in April of 2015, we got there late in the afternoon and the guide was too tired to walk with us. So we walked around by ourselves and later sat down and talked with him. He told us about his personal experience in the war and how it effected his family. It was a very sad story that led to tiers on both sides. I read the museum got damaged in May 2015 during a storm, but that it was repaired.

Het War Museum is gebouwd in 2001 en geeft bezoekers een mogelijkheid om meer over de oorlog in Cambodja te weten te komen. Op het veld staan verschillende voertuigen, zoals tanks en vliegtuigen, en er is een gedeelte met foto’s. Het is niet erg groot en je kan er goed doorheen lopen. Je kan ook een gids vragen om jou rond te leiden.
Toen Nina en ik in april 2015 op een late middag daar aankwamen, was de gids er moe. Wij besloten eerst alleen rond te lopen en later even bij de gids te zitten. Hij vertelde ons zijn eigen ervaringen en wat de invloed ervan is geweest in zijn familie. Het was een erg verdrietig verhaal en zorgde ervoor dat niet alleen Nina en ik, maar ook de gids zelf een traantje moesten laten. Ik las dat het museum in mei 2015 beschadigd was door een storm, maar dat het ondertussen al weer gerepareerd is.

– Cambodian Landmine Museum
The Cambodian Landmine Museum was built in 1996 by a ex-child soldier called Aki Ra. The museum teaches visitors about the importance of clearing landmines in Cambodia. Aki Ra has disarmed thousands landmines by himself! How impressive is that! On the property there is also a Relief Center, where children from small villages go to school.

Het Cambodian Landmine Museum is gebouwd in 1996 door een ex-kindsoldaat genaamd Aki Ra. Het museum leert de bezoekers over hoe belangrijk het is dat landmijnen in Cambodia worden opgeruimd. Aki Ra heeft zelf duizenden landmijnen onschadelijk gemaakt! Hoe indrukwekkend! Ook staat er achter het museum een Relief Center, waar kinderen uit kleine dorpjes naar school gaan.

FOOD/ ETEN

– Sister Srey Cafe
Sister Srey Cafe  (srey means sister in Khmer) is my (and Nina’s) favorite café in Siem Reap! It is run by two Australian sisters. Their vision is to help young Khmer students who try to keep a balance between study and supporting their family. I went here almost everyday during both of my stays in Siem Reap for either breakfast or lunch. The food is modern and tasty, the staff is incredibly friendly and the atmosphere is nice.

Sister Srey Cafe (srey betekent zus in Khmer) is mijn (en Nina’s) favoriete café in Siem Reap! Het wordt gerund door twee Australische zussen. Hun visie is het ondersteunen van Khmer studenten die proberen een balans te vinden tussen studeren en hun familie helpen. Tijdens beide keren dat ik in Siem Reap verbleef, ben ik hier minstens een keer per dag geweest voor ontbijt of lunch. Het eten is modern en lekker, het personeel is ontzettend aardig en de sfeer is fijn.

– Blue Pumpkin bakery
Blue Pumpkin is my favorite bakery in the city centre. I went here whenever I craved a sweet breakfast, because they had a lot of tasty danish pastry. Also I loved their lime juice, which was very refreshing.

Blue Pumpkim is mijn favoriete bakkerij in het centrum. Ik kwam hier als ik zin had in een zoet ontbijt, omdat zij veel zoete broodjes en croissants hadden. Ook hebben zij de lekkerste en friste limoensap.

– Gelato lab
In 2015 Nina and I were very happy when we found Gelato lab, because ‘fresh’ icecream is hard to find (and trust) in Asia. The icecream at Gelato lab was amazing! They hade different types of icecream, some were made with water (sorbet) and some with milk (creamy). My favorite flavour was the ‘chocolate hazelnut’.
When I came back to Siem Reap this year and walk to Gelato lab, it was empty! I was very disappointed and could not find anything about why it was closed. Now I know that they were moving to another building.

In 2015 waren Nina en ik erg blij toen wij Gelato lab vonden, omdat het moeilijk is om ‘vers’ ijs te vinden (en vetrouwen) in Azie. Het ijs bij Gelato lab was fantastisch! Ze hadden verschillende types ijs, sommigen waren gemaakt met water en anderen met melk. Mijn favoriete smaak was de ‘chocolade hazelnoot’.
Toen ik dit jaar terug was in Siem Reap, bleek dat de winkel leeg stond! Ik was erg teleurgesteld en kon niks vinden over waarom het dicht was. Nu weet ik dat zij zijn verhuisd naar een andere winkel.

– Khmer Kitchen
Khmer Kitchen was according to my Lonely Planet book the place to try some good Amok. Amok is a signature dish of Cambodia; it is a thick soup cooked with fish or meat, vegetables and coconut milk, and usually served with white rice. When I went here it was very crowded! The Amok, quite similar to a Thai curry, was tasty and you could even ask for more white rice if you wanted to.

Khmer Kitchen was volgens mijn Lonely Planet boek de plek om Amok te proberen. Amok is een bekend gerecht in Cambodja. Het is een dikke soup met vis of vlees, groentes en kokosnootmelk, en wordt vaak geserveerd met rijst. Toen ik er heen ging was het erg druk! De Amok, vergelijkbaar met een Thaise curry, was lekker en je kon vragen om meer rijst, als je dat wilde.

HOSTEL/ SLAPEN

– The Siem Reap Hostel (2015)
The Siem Reap Hostel was the first hostel Nina and I chose in 2015. Online it looked like a social hostel and it had a pool! We slept here for two nights, but thought it was too expensive and we did not like the vibe there. They did have a board on which you could write your name to share a tuktuk with people to Angkor Wat. After two nights we went to The Luxury Concept Hostel.

Het Siem Reap Hostel was het eerste hostel waar Nina en ik in 2015 verbleven. Online leek het een sociaal hostel en het had een zwembad! We sliepen er twee nachten, maar wij vonden het te duur en vonden de sfeer ook niet super. Wel hadden ze een handig bord bij de ingang, waar je je naam kon opschrijven om een tuktuk naar Angkor Wat te delen. Na de twee nachten ‘verhuisden’ wij naar The Luxury Concept Hostel.

– The Luxury Concept Hostel (2015 & 2016)
This was the second hostel we tried in 2015 and we liked it much more. It had a relaxed vibe and was closer to Pubstreet, where all the restaurants and bars are.
In 2016 I decided to go back to this hostel. After one night I went to another hostel, because it is not the best hostel for solo travelers, not much of a social vibe. I met my friend Maxime at the Onderz Hostel.

Dit was het tweede hostel waar wij in 2015 verbleven en wij hadden het hier erg naar ons zin. Het had een relaxte sfeer en het was een stuk dichterbij de restaurants en bars.
In 2016 ging ik terug naar dit hostel. Na een nacht ben ik naar een ander hostel gegaan, omdat dit niet het beste hostel is als je alleen bent, er is geen sociale sfeer. Ik sprak daarom met Maxime af om de volgende nachten in het Onderz Hostel te slapen.

– Onderz Hostel (2016)
I stayed in the Onderz Hostel a few nights and I liked it a lot. It is very spacious and social, but also very chill and still close to Pubstreet. The staff is friendly and the dorms and bathrooms were clean. Also, this hostel had a board on which you could write your name and share a tuktuk with people to the Angkor temples. And for the people who got up at 4 or 5 o’clock in the morning to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat, they even offered a simple breakfast (toast with tea of coffee).

In het Onderz Hostel sliep ik een paar nachten. Ik vond dit hostel erg fijn. Het is erg ruim opgezet en er hangt een sociale sfeer, maar het was ergens ook wel rustig en nog steeds dichtbij Pubstreet. Het personeel was vriendelijk en de kamers en badkamers waren schoon. Ook dit hostel had een bord waarop je je naam kon schrijven om een tuktuk naar de Angkor tempels te delen. Voor de mensen die ‘s ochtends om 4 of 5 uur naar de zonsopkomst bij Angkor Wat gingen lag er een minimalitisch ontbijtje klaar (toast met thee of koffie).
