My second to last neighborhood guide for New York is about the Upper East Side. This area is between Central Park and the East River and has been in many movies and tv shows (like Sex & the city and Gossip Girl). So I was very curious about what it was really like.
SIGHTS
The Upper East Side is known for the “Museum Mile”, a long street with loads of museums.
– The Met
The Metropolitan Museum of Art (also known as The Met) is one of biggest museums in New York. The outside is already very impressive, with the stairs. And there is a lot to see. I spend about three hours here and even then I felt like I had rushed it, because I wanted to see everything.
When I was at The Met, there was a lovely exhibit on fashion by Anna Wintour (with dress by Dolce & Gabanna, Lacroix etc.). It was set up very well with the lights and the music.
The Met is also famous for the “Temple of Dendur”, which was very impressive.
This museum has everything; from medieval knights to Cambodian Angkor art. No matter what you are interested in, you will surely find a floor with some inspiring pieces.
I have been to many museums in New York (about 6) and this one was definitely the best one. It reminded me a lot of the Louvre in Paris and the Britisch Museum in London.
Buy a ticket online and you can easily walk in.
– Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (or the Guggenheim Museum) is a museum for modern art. The building is very unique and designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. On the inside it is a ramp gallery that extends up from ground level in a long, continuous spiral along the outer edges of the building and ends just under the ceiling.
The interior is very clean and basic.
When I was there, there was an exhibit of Giacometti. Sadly I am not a big fan of his work, but it was nice to walk around the museum.
Definitely buy a ticket online, so you do not have to stand in line for too long.
Dylan’s Candy Bar
Address: 1011 3rd Avenue.
Dylan’s Candy Bar is a candy shop and created in 2001 by Dylan Lauren (daughter of fashion designer Ralph Lauren). It is a candy shop for children and adults, because there are hundreds of types of candies and the displays with colorful candies are lovely. You can choose to pick and mix and it is not too expensive. It can be a little overwhelming and might be difficult to choose, but the ones I bought were tasty.
FOOD
Because I follow two Youtubers that live in the Upper East Side (AstoldbyAshandShelbs), I had pleny of cafes and restaurants written down that I wanted to try.
– Bluestone Lane Cafe
Address: I went to the one on 1085 5th Avenue, but there are about 10 locations in Manhattan.
I went to Bluestone Lane Cafe on a morning. It was quite busy with locals (true Upper East Siders- who were very fun to eavesdrop on). The avocado toast was delishes and the staff was friendly.
– The Meatball shop
Address: I went tot the one on but they have several locations in Manhattan.
The Meatball shop is THE place to eat some meatballs. And do not worry, if you do not like beef, or do not eat meat, you can also eat here. This place has a very cool concept; you can pick your meat, sause, toppings etc.I went for the meatballs in tomatosauce and it was very good.
– Pick a Bagel
Address: A few locations in Manhattan.
Pick-a-bagel is a great place to buy a lunch on the go. I chose a bagel with cream cheese and a mozzarella/pesto panini. Both were good. The staff was very friendly too.
– Sprinkles cupcakes
Address: 780 Lexington Avenue.
Sprinkles cupcakes is very famous (especially their cupcake ATM machine), so I had to try one of their cupcakes. I bought a red velvet cupcake and a chocolate one. Although I normally do not like red velvet that much, but it was very good, and so was the chocolate one. They were not too sweet.

Mijn een na laatste reisgids voor New York gaat over de Upper East Side. Deze buurt bevindt zich tussen Central Park en de East River en er zijn veel films en tvseries opgenomen (zoals Sex & the city en Gossip Girl). Dus ik was erg benieuwd hoe deze buurt in het echt was.

– The Met
Het Metropolitan Museum of Art (ook wel bekend als The Met) is een van de grootste musea in New York. De buitenkant alleen is al erg indrukwekkend, met de trappen. En er is veel te zien. Ik heb hier minstens drie uur rondgelopen en dat voelde zelfs gehaast, omdat ik alles wilde zien.
Toen ik in The Met was, was er een prachtige tentoonstelling over mode door Anna Wintour (met jurken van Dolce & Gabanna, Lacroix enz.). Het was mooi opgezet met de lichten en de muziek.
The Met is ook bekend door de “Temple of Dendur” welke ook erg mooi is.
Dit museum heeft van alles; van middeleeuwse ridders tot Cambodiaanse Angkor kunst. Het maakt hier uit waar je in geïnteresseerd bent, je vindt hier zeker iets dat je kan waarderen.
Ik ben in veel musea in New York geweest (ongeveer 6) en deze was zeker de beste. Het deed mij denken aan het Louvre in Parijs en het Britisch Museum in Londen.
Zorg dat je een ticket online koopt, dan kun je gemakkelijk binnenkomen.

De Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (of het Guggenheim Museum) is een museum voor moderne kunst. Het gebouw alleen als is erg uniek en ontworpen door de Amerikaanse architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Binnen lopen de vloers schuin omhoog in een cirkel. Het interieur is erg wit en strak.
Toen ik er was, was er een tentoonstelling over Giacometti. Helaas ben ik geen grote fan van zijn werk, maar het was leuk om door het museum te lopen.
Ook hier is het handig als je online een ticket hebt gekocht, zodat je niet al te lang in de rij hoeft te staan.
Dylan’s Candy Bar

Dylan’s Candy Bar is een snoepwinkel en het idee van Dylan Lauren (dochter van mode ontwerper Ralph Lauren). Het is een snoepwinkel voor zowel kinderen als volwassenen, want er zijn wel honderden soorten snoep. De kleurrijke displays en de pick and mix maken het een leuke ervaring. Het kan best moeilijk zijn om te kiezen, maar het is niet al te duur en het smaakt prima.
ETEN
Omdat ik twee Youtubers volg die aan de Upper East Side wonen (AstoldbyAshandShelbs), had ik genoeg cafés en restaurants opgeschreven die ik wilde bezoeken.
– Bluestone Lane Cafe

Ik ging naar Bluestone Lane Cafe op een ochtend. Op dat moment was het redelijk druk met echte Upper East Siders- en het was wel leuk om hun te kunnen af te luisteren. De avocado toast was heerlijk en het personeel was vriendelijk.

Adres: Ik bezocht die aan maar er zijn verschillende locaties in Manhattan.
The Meatball shop is DE plek voor gehaktballen. En vrees niet, ook als je liever geen gehakt eet of vegetarisch bent, kun je hier eten. Dit restaurant heeft een origineel concept: je kiest je type vlees, je saus, je toppings enz. Ik koos de gehaktballen in tomatensaus en ze waren heerlijk.

Pick-a-bagel is een prima plek voor een lunch to go. Ik kocht er een bagel met cream cheese en een mozzarella/pesto panini. Beide waren lekker. Het personeel was ook vriendelijk.

Sprinkles cupcakes is erg bekend (vooral door hun cupcake pin automaat), dus ik moest echt een van hun cupcakes proberen. Ik kocht een red velvet cupcake en een chocolade cupcake. Ondanks dat ik normaal niet van red velvet houd, smaakte deze goed en de chocolate ook. Ze waren niet te zoet.
