Breakfast might be the most important meal of the day, especially when you are backpacking. I feel that you need a good breakfast before you visit a busy city, an old ruin site or go diving, at least I do.
In Vietnam most hostels have breakfast included (in their price for the bed), often toast or a baguette with eggs, but that is not always the case in Cambodia and Thailand. Sometimes there was a free breakfast available, but that was not much more than toast and jam. That is why I went out for breakfast more in Cambodia and Thailand. Sometimes I went to a restaurant for muesli or a fruit salad, sometimes I went to a bakery for a croissant (the milky croissants at 7/11 do not even come close to the fresh ones from a bakery). I also found it easy to buy a croissants to take away, so that I would have something in my bag for lunch if I was going on a long travelday.
Today I share with you 6 bakeries in Southeast Asia where the croissants (and other pastries) were delicious…in no particular order.

1. ABC Bakery (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam)

You will find ABC Bakery on one of the busier streets in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). I went here twice during my stay in HCMC in 2015 (but made no photo’s). They have a lof of different types of bread including croissants. There is a little terrace outside where you can sit and eat, but you can also opt for a take away.

2. The Blue Pumpkin (Siem Reap, Cambodia)

The Blue Pumpkin is a bakery in the middle of Siem Reap. Not only do they sell different types of breads, they also sell pastry, cookies and ice cream! Their recipes are all original and the products are made in-house.
During both of my stays in Siem Reap in 2015 and 2016 I went here a few times. I liked the croissants and the passionfruit danish pastry a lot. Also, their limejuice was delicious!
The interior is very modern, upstairs is a huge white area to chill with beds and airco. Outside is a small terrace with a roof, which is great if you want to escape the sun for a bit. And the staff is very friendly.

3. Phi Phi Bakery (Koh Phi Phi, Thailand )

Phi Phi Bakery, which has apparently been open since 1989(!), is located close to the pier and hard to miss when you are walking around Tonsai Village. You can either sit inside or have a take away. They have good juices, a lot of different types of bread, pastries and desserts.
I went here a few times for breakfast during my stay in 2015. The croissants and pastries were good and the staff was friendly. Sadly I forgot to take a photo, but I did grab a businesscard as a souvenir.

4. Konnichipan Bakery (Bangkok, Thailand)

Konnichipan Bakery is a bakery only few streets away from Koh San Road. When I was in Bangkok last year I was craving a croissant. I found this bakery on TripAdvisor and because it was near my hostel I decided to go to it. It is a small bakery on a busy road. The croissants are good, but the blueberry and creamcheese danish pastry is by far my favorite! So good! They also sell other bread, cookies and pastries. Inside and outside are a few tables where you can sit, but it is quite small. I preferred to just quickly grab some breakfast and eat somewhere else (again, I forgot to take photo’s).

5. Daily Baguette (Ubud, Bali)

Daily Baguette is a french bakery in central Ubud, opposite Museum Puri Lukisan. They claim to import the best flour from France and try to bring their customers a piece of France that way. They sell a wide variety of different types of bread (whole breads or slices) and different croissants. Also, they sell loads of pastries and even cakes (Lemon pies, Chocolate tarts and even birthday- and weddingcakes!).
I went here a few times during my stay in Ubud. The staff (and manager) were friendly and they have a terrace upstairs.

6. Breadelicious (Gili Air, Indonesia)

Breadelicious is a bakery on Gili Air. It is a simple looking bakery with seatingarea’s inside and outside. One morning when I was walking from my hostel to the pier, I noticed Breadelicious and decided to have breakfast there. I ordered a normal croissant and a chocolate one, and both were good. When I mentioned I also wanted to have a croissant to take away, they gave me the croissant in a white box, which was very kind.

Als je backpackt, is het ontbijt waarschijnlijk  je belangrijkste maaltijd van de dag. Ik vind het altijd belangrijk om een goed ontbijt te eten voordat ik op pad ga in een drukke stad, een oude ruinsite bezoek of  ga duiken.
In Vietnam zit er het ontbijt bijna altijd bij de prijs van het bed in, vaak krijg je dan toast of een broodje met een ei, maar dat is niet altijd het geval in Cambodja en Thailand. Soms is er een gratis ontbijt aanwezig, maar vaak is dat niet meer dan toast met jam. Daarom ging ik in Cambodja en Thailand vaker buiten de deur ontbijten. Soms ging ik naar een restaurant voor muesli of een fruit salade, en soms ging ik naar een bakker voor een croissant (de croissants van 7/11 komen totaal niet in de buurt van de verse croissants van de bakker). Ook was het handig als ik een lange dag voor de boeg had, dan kocht ik een of twee croissants als take away.
Vandaag deel ik 6 bakkerijen in Zuidoost Azië met jullie waar de croissants (en andere lekkere zoetje broodjes) heerlijk waren, in willekeurige volgorde.

Je vindt ABC Bakery in een van de drukke straten in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). Ik ben hier tijdens mijn bezoek aan de stad twee keer geweest (maar helaas vergat ik foto’s te maken). Ze hebben hier verschillende broodjes, waaronder croissants. Er is een klein terras buiten waar je je broodje kunt opeten, maar omdat het aan de weg zit zou ik dat niet aanraden.

2. The Blue Pumpkin (Siem Reap, Cambodia)

The Blue Pumpkin is een bakkerij in het centrum van Siem Reap. Niet alleen verkopen ze verschillende broodjes, ze hebben ook gebakjes, koekjes en ijs! Hun recepten zijn origineel en de producten worden daar gemaakt.
Tijdens mijn verblijven in 2015 en in 2016 ben ik hier meerdere keren geweest. Ik ben dol op de croissants and de passievrucht gebakjes! En de limoensap was ook erg lekker.
Het interieur is erg modern, boven is een grote witte ruimte met bedden en airco. Buiten is een klein terras, waar je goed kunt zitten als je de zon even wilt ontwijken. Het personeel was ook altijd erg vriendelijk.

3. Phi Phi Bakery (Koh Phi Phi, Thailand )

Phi Phi Bakery, die schijnbaar als sinds 1989(!) is geopend, vindt je op een kleine loopafstand van de pier en is niet te missen als je door Tonsai Village loopt. Je kan binnen zitten of kiezen voor een take away. De sappen zijn lekker, en ze hebben verschillende broden, gebakjes en toetjes.
Ik ben hier een paar keer geweest en de croissants en taartjes waren lekker, en het personeel was erg aardig. Helaas heb ik geen foto’s gemaakt, wel had ik een businesscard meegenomen als souvenir.

4. Konnichipan Bakery (Bangkok, Thailand)

Konnichipan Bakery zit slechts een paar staren van Koh San Road. Toen ik afgelopen zomer in Bangkok was, wilde ik graag een croissant. Op TripAdvisor vond ik Konnichipan en omdat het dichtbij mijn hostel zat, besloot ik erheen te lopen. Het is een kleine bakker langs een drukke weg. De croissants zijn lekker, maar het blauwe bessen en cream cheese ‘gebakje’ is mijn favoriet! Zo lekker! Ze verkopen ook andere broodjes, koekjes en gebakjes. Je kunt zowel binnen als buiten zitten, maar het is vrij klein. Ik nam de broodjes vaak mee en at ze ergens anders op (weer vergat ik foto’s te maken).

5. Daily Baguette (Ubud, Bali)

Daily Baguette is een Franse bakkerij in centraal Ubud, tegenover het Museum Puri Lukisan. Ze importeren het beste bloem uit Frankrijk om zo hun klanten een stukje van Frankrijk te geven. Ze verkopen veel verschillende borden (hele broden of plakken) en verschillende croissants. Ook verkopen ze heel veel gebakjes en zelfs taarten (Lemon pies, chocolade taarten, en zelfs verjaardags- en bruidstaarten!).
Ik ben hier een paar keer geweest en het personeel was altijd behulpzaam. Ze hebben ook een terras op de eerste verdieping.

6. Breadelicious (Gili Air, Indonesia)

Breadelicious is een bakkerij op Gili Air. Het is een simpel uitziende bakkerij met zitgelegenheden binnen en buiten. Op een morgen toen ik van mijn hostel naar de pier liep, kwam ik langs Breadelicious en besloot ik daar te ontbijten. Ik bestelde een gewone croissant en een chocolade croissant, en beide smaakten goed. Toen ik zei dat ik ook graag een wilde meenemen, kreeg ik die croissant mee in een doosje, erg aardig.
