Like I said in my article ‘Thoughts on: Vietnam’ my experience with Vietnam was great. I spend one month in this country in 2015 and feel like I have seen most of what this country has to offer.  So here are 7 bucketlist points for a trip to Vietnam.


1. Halong Bay
Vietnam has such a versatile landscape, from green ricefields to white beaches. Halong Bay is an Unesco sight for a reason; the limestone rockformations are truly beautiful. A trip to Vietnam is not complete without boattour through these little islands.

2. Trekking
Another thing to do in the north is a trekking in Sapa or Ninh Binh. These towns are full of (green) ricefields, and although walking 12 km with the heat is tough, the views and the locals are making it worthwhile.
If you are not a fan of walking, renting a motorcycle and riding around Dalat might be a fun idea.

3. Sanddunes
In the south of Vietnam, in Mui Ne, you can find two types of sanddunes. The white sanddunes are huge and almost look like the Sahara. You can rent quad bikes or sand buggies, or just walk around for a bit. The red sanddunes are equally impressive and especially beautiful around sunset.

4. Spend some time at the beach
It might surprise you, but there are beaches in Vietnam. You can check out the beaches in Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang or on Phu Quoc island. I spend a week in Hoi An and went to An Bang beach almost every day, because it was not too touristy and pretty relaxed.

5. Learn about the history
Vietnam is not only known for the nature but also for the wars it was in. There are a few places in Vietnam where you can learn about the history about Vietnam (and the wars this country was in). In Hanoi you can visit the Hao Lo Prison or Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum, and in Ho Chi Minh City you will find the War Remnants museum, which was very shocking and eye opening.
If you are more interested in older history, then a visit to the city of Hue is a good idea. Here you can get  information about the emperors and the time that Hue was the national capital.

6. Try some delicious Vietnamese streetfood
When visiting Vietnam, trying some of their local dishes is a must. Take a seat on one of those blue or red plastic chairs down the side of the road and enjoy some Pho, White Rose of Bun Cha. Click here for my article over Vietnamese food.

7. Meet the locals
I also believe that a visit to Vietnam is not complete without some interaction with the locals. When I went trekking in Sapa, we were joined by women of some local tribes. And we did a homestay with a family; we had dinner with them but were not able to speak to them since they did not speak any English.

Zoals ik al in mijn artikel ‘Thoughts on: Vietnam’ zei was mijn trip naar Vietnam goed. Ik bracht een maand door in dit land en had genoeg tijd om te zien wat dit land allemaal te bieden heeft.
Hier zijn 7 punten voor op de Vietnam Bucket list.

1. Halong Bay
Vietnam heeft een erg veelzijdig landschap, van groene rijstvelden tot witte stranden. Halong Bay staat niet voor niets op de Werelderfgoedlijst van Unesco; de rotsformaties zijn echt prachtig. Een trip naar Vietnam is niet compleet zodat een boattrip langse deze eilanden.

2. Trekking
In het noorden van Vietnam kun je goed een trekking goed. Sapa en Ninh Binh zijn prima plekken om de rijstvelden te bezoeken, en ondanks dat 12 km lopen in de witte zwaar is, maken het uitzicht en de locale bevolking te waard.
Als je geen fan van lopen bent, kun je ook goed rond Dalat een motorfiets huren.

3. Zandduinen
In het zuiden van Vietnam, in Mui Ne, kun je twee soorten zandduinen vinden. De witte zandduinen zijn erg groot en doen denken aan de Sahara. Je kunt er quad bikes huren of buggies, of je kunt rondlopen. De roze zandduinen zijn net zo indrukwekkend, helemaal tijdens de zonsondergang.

4. De stranden
Het zal je misschien verrassen maar er zijn ook stranden in Vietnam. De beste stranden zijn te vinden in Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang of op het eiland Phu Quoc. Ik bracht een week door in Hoi An en vond An Bang beach het fijnste, omdat het er niet al te druk was.

5. Leer over de geschiedenis
Vietnam staat niet alleen bekend voor de natuur maar ook voor de oorlogen. Er zijn een paar plekken in Vietnam waar je veel te weten kan komen over de geschiedenis en de oorlogen. In Hanoi kun je de Hao Lo gevangenis bezoeken of Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum, en in Ho Chi Minh City staat het War Remnants Museum, wat erg schokkerend en indrukwekkend is.
Als je geinteresseerd ben in oudere geschiedenis is een bezoek aan Hue misschien een idee. Hier kun je informatie krijgen over de tijd dat Hue de hoofdstad van Vietnam was en de dynastieën die er toen waren.

6. Probeer het heerlijke Vietnamese eten
Als je een bezoek brengt aan Vietnam moet je echt een paar lokale gerechten proberen. Neem plaats op een van de blauw of rode plastic stoeltjes langs de weg en geniet van de Pho, White Rose of Bun Cha. Klik hier voor mijn artikel over Vietnamese eten.

7. Contact met de lokale bevolking
In Vietnam zijn verschillende mogelijkheden om met de lokale bevolking in contact te komen. Zo werden wij tijdens onze trekking in Sapa ondersteund door vrouwen van de lokale tribes. Ook overnachtten we bij een lokale familie; helaas konden we niet echt met hen praten omdat zij geen Engels spraken.
