The Gili Islands are three small islands between Bali and Lombok (Indonesia). You can take a (fast)boat from Bali (like Padangbai) or Lombok (Bangsal). A boattrip from Bali to the Gili’s takes about two hours. You can go from one Gili to the other with a little boat, which will only take about fifteen minutes. The Gili’s are known for their nice beaches and marinelife.
Remember that since the Gili’s are a part of Lombok and Lombok is muslim, the locals on the Gili’s are muslim too and there are a few mosques on the island.

On the Gili’s are no roads, just dirt roads (with holes, so watch out!). Cars are prohibited on the islands so you can either walk, rent a bike or pay for a horse-thing (called a cidomo).

De Gili eilanden zijn drie eilanden tussen Bali en Lombok (Indonesië). Je komt er met een (snelle) boot van Bali (zoals Padangbai) of Lombok (Bangsal). Een bootrit vanaf Bali naar de Gili’s duurt ongeveer twee uren. Met een kleinere boot kun je van het ene Gili eiland naar de andere gaan, wat ongeveer vijftien minuten duurt. De Gili’s zijn bekend om hun mooie stranden en het onderwaterleven.

Op de Gili’s zijn geen wegen, alleen zandweggetjes (met gaten!). Auto’s zijn verboden op de eilanden, dus je kan lopen, een fiets huren of een paard-en-wagen (een cidomo) betalen.

 

 

Gili Air is the closest island to Lombok. It’s name comes from the Indonesian word for water ‘Ah-Yer’, because it is the only of the three islands to have subterranean fresh water. Gili Air is also the ‘most versatile’ of the three Gili’s. Where Gili Meno is popular with couples and families, and Gili Trawangan is known as a party island, Gili Air has something for everybody.

Gili Air is het eiland die het dichtste bij Lombok ligt. Het eiland dankt zijn naam aan het Indonesische woord voor water ‘Ah-Yer’, en dat heeft te maken met het feit dat het het enige eiland van de drie is die onderaards vers water heeft.
Gili Air is ook het veelzijdigste eiland in de zin dat waar Gili Meno vooral geliefd is bij stellen en families, en Gili Trawangan bij de feestbeesten, Gili Air voor iedereen wat heeft.

SIGHTS/ ZIEN

 

– Going to the beach
On Gili Air is not much to do. The main thing to do is to enjoy the sun and the sea. The sea is clear and the sand is full of coral, so be careful (it is painful). During the day you can see the other Gili’s in the distance.

Op Gili Air zelf is niet veel te doen. Mensen komen naar dit eiland om te genieten van de zon en het strand. De zee is helder en het zand is vol met koraal, dus wees voorzichtig (koraal is pijnlijk voor je voeten). Gedurende de dag kun je de ander Gili’s in de verte zien liggen.

 

– Watching the sunset
I have said it before, one of my favorite things to do on an island is to see the sunset. So it is no surprise that during my two days on Gili Air I made some beautiful photo’s of the sunset.

Ik heb het al eerder gezegd, een van mijn favoriete bezigheden op een eiland is het zien van de zonsondergang. Tijdens de twee dagen op Gili Air heb ik dan ook prachtige foto’s gemaakt van de zonsondergangen.

 

– Snorkeling
I went on a snorkeling trip around the Gili’s during my stay at Gili Air. I booked it through my hostel. We were only with ten people and had a local guide that showed us four or five snorkeling spots. We saw a lot of pretty fish and even a turtle!

Tijdens mijn verblijf op Gili Air besloot ik een snorkeltrip te boeken. Ik boekte het via het hostel waar ik sliep. De groep bestond uit ongeveer tien mensen en wij hadden een lokale gids die ons vier of vijf snorkelplekken liet zien. Wij zagen veel mooie vissen en zelfs een schildpad!

During the snorkelingtrip we went to Gili Meno for lunch. Gili Meno is the middle island and apparently very quiet. On this island you will find a lake and a turtle sanctuary.

Tijdens de snorkeltrip gingen wij naar Gili Meno om te lunchen. Gili Meno is het middelste eiland en blijkbaar erg rustig. Op dit eiland vind je een meer en een schildpadden sanctuary.

FOOD/ ETEN
Since I only stayed two days on the island, I can not say much about the food. I had breakfast at the hostel, lunch on Gili Meno during my snorkelingtrip and had dinner twice at random restaurants. It was nothing special, just mie of nasi goreng.

Omdat ik slechts twee nachten op het eiland verbleef, kan ik niet veel zeggen over het eten. Ik ontbeet bij het hostel, at lunch op Gili Meno tijdens mijn snorkelingtrip en at twee keer ‘s  avonds bij een restaurantje aan het strand. Het was niets speciaals, gewoon bami of nasi goreng.

 

 

HOSTEL/ SLAPEN
The two nights at Gili Air I slept at Begadang Backpackers. There were bungalows where you could sleep either inside in a bunkbed or on a matress on the patio (with mosquito nets). The guys at the reception were friendly and there was also a pool. The dorms were not the best (very small and dark…almost claustrofobic), but the bathrooms/showers were clean (the shower in my dorm was made of bamboo and had no roof, very cool!).
However, this hostel was quite a walk from the harbor since it is in the middle of the island..so far away from the busy area.

De twee nachten op Gili Air sliep ik in Begadang Backpackers. Er waren bungalows waar je of in een stapelbed binnen of op een matras op de veranda kon slapen (met muggennetten). The jongens van de receptie waren vriendelijk en er was een zwembad. De bungalows waren niet geweldig (klein en donker..beetje claustrofobisch), maar de badkamers waren schoon (de douche in mijn kamer was gemaakt van bamboo en had geen dak, hoe gaaf!).
Let wel, dit hostel is een flink stuk lopen van de haven omdat het in het midden van het eiland ligt…dus ver van de drukte.
